Burma's Prime Minister to Visit the Philippines

Burma says its prime minister will make an official visit to the Philippines next week. Lieutenant General Soe Win and a delegation will leave for Manila on Sunday.

This will be Soe Win's first visit to the Philippines since he took office last October. He replaced General Khin Nyunt, who was fired on charges of corruption and insubordination.

It is unknown whether detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be a topic of talks with Philippine President Gloria Arroyo.

The Philippines has been among the more outspoken critics in Asia of the military regime in Burma.

Both countries belong to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Burma has faced increasing international criticism over the continued house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi.
